India Post GDS 2026 Eligibility
- Class 10 pass with passing marks in Mathematics and English, from a board recognised by the central or a state/UT government.
- You must have studied the local language of the post at least up to Class 10 (special rules apply in Arunachal Pradesh, Goa, Sikkim and Nagaland).
- Age 18 to 40 on the last date of application. SC/ST get 5 extra years, OBC 3 and PwBD 10 (13 for PwBD-OBC, 15 for PwBD-SC/ST); EWS gets no relaxation.
- Knowledge of computers and of cycling, and another source of income for an adequate livelihood.
- A selected Branch Postmaster must arrange accommodation for the branch post office and live in the post village.

How to Apply for India Post GDS 2026
- Complete one-time registration on indiapost.gov.in/gdsonlineengagement (31 August to 19 September 2026, until 5 pm). Only one registration per candidate is allowed.
- Submit the online application and choose your division and posts (2 to 21 September 2026, until 5 pm). No documents are uploaded, only a recent photo and signature.
- Pay the ₹100 fee online unless you are exempt: women, SC/ST, PwBD and transwomen pay nothing. Payment must be complete by 5 pm on the closing day.
- Mistakes could be corrected on 23 and 24 September 2026, until 5 pm, without registering again.

Schedule-II of the GDS online engagement lists 23,757 posts of Branch Postmaster, Assistant Branch Postmaster and Dak Sevak. Tamil Nadu has the most with 2,118, followed by Uttar Pradesh with 1,691, West Bengal with 1,619, Odisha with 1,353 and Bihar with 1,098. Each post is tied to a local language, which you must have studied up to Class 10.
Selection without an exam
There is no written test. The merit list is prepared from the marks in your Class 10 examination, turned into a percentage accurate to four decimal places. If your marksheet shows only grades, each grade point is multiplied by 9.5, so an A1 (10 points) becomes 95 marks. Shortlisted candidates must bring original documents for physical verification.
Eligibility for Gramin Dak Sevak
You need a Class 10 pass with passing marks in Mathematics and English from a recognised board, and you must have studied the post's local language up to Class 10. Pay and nature of the job

They are not regular government employees, work four to five hours a day, mostly in rural areas, and can serve up to 65. A Branch Postmaster runs the branch post office from accommodation arranged at their own cost and must live in the post village.
